Beliefs
Our beliefs are private, what we believe (or not believe) is our business. I, on the other hand, never having been reserved with my opinions, shall lay mine bare.
Mercifully, the only person affected by our beliefs is ourselves and no one else. It is also true that our beliefs guide and influence out behaviors and our behavior may in fact effect other people. But that's a different thing, as beliefs and behaviors are something else.
Imagine that you had to pull an all-nighter and drag your tired self home close to 7 A.M. You close the blinds so you could catch a few hours of sleep, deluding yourself into believing it is night time. Whom does this belief affect? You got it.
Dogma
Dogma is organized beliefs. It is a belief system (BS) organized as a prescribed set of tenets and behaviors. It is essentially saying, "Here is what we believe and you have to believe it, too". Dogma typically limits the scope of questions since some beliefs must not be questioned. This sets an upper boundary for potential growth and exploration. I prefer to be open to growth and evolution and tend to opt for progressive, rather than regressive choices — without judgment or prejudice.
Pragma
Pragmatism is a philosophical tradition that views language and thought as tools for prediction, problem solving, and action, rather than describing, representing, or mirroring reality. Pragmatists contend that most philosophical topics—such as the nature of knowledge, language, concepts, meaning, belief, and science—are best viewed in terms of their practical uses and successes. Or, in John's behavioral definition: notice what works and do more of it. Notice what doesn't and do less of it. I am a pragmatist.
Religion
Religion, like politics and sex, is another subject best avoided in polite conversation. Religion is an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, practices, and worship that centers on a higher power or god(s). Religions often have sacred texts, moral codes, rituals, and places of worship. They provide a framework for understanding the meaning of life, the universe, and humanity's place in it. Religions can also foster a sense of community and shared identity among their followers. There are many different religions in the world, each with its own unique beliefs and practices. Some of the major world religions include Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. Religion can play a significant role in shaping individuals' values, behaviors, and worldviews. Religion is built on dogma.
What I believe
I believe in God, a higher power. In one of my quiet moments, God told me that he wants to have a direct and personal relationship with me. So, I don't subscribe to any organized religion and I don't attend church. I pray to God regularly — with every breath I take, I give thanks to God.
